Blind People Protest Against Latest Pizza Hut Online Video

Pizza Hut Protest

Blind people across multiple Chinese cities turned out in front of Pizza Hut restaurants to protest against Pizza Hut’s latest online video.

The controversy stems from a dialogue between the two characters below, paired with the below image of a blind shrimp ball.

The male cartoon on the left says, “Do you know why the ball is rolling around everywhere? Because it’s a shrimp (blind) ball”.

In Chinese ‘shrimp’ is said in the same way as you would say blind. ‘Ball’ in this instance also has a subtle negative meaning. This is emphasized by an onscreen display of a shrimp ball, wearing sunglasses and holding a striped cane next to the characters “虾”(SHRIMP) “瞎”(BLIND).

Below is a news report showing one particular protest outside a Pizza Hut restaurant in Shi Jia Zhuang, Hebei province.

Pizza Hut have now issued a formal apology and pulled the online video. At the time of writing, the video could no longer be found online.

Yum Foods really needs to do a lot more if they want to retain their credibility. Their lunch and dinner menu is quite extensive but offers very little in the way of vegetarian options… something the Chinese government should really try to encourage seeing as how Chinese are killing everything, eating it and getting fat. Also, the restrooms at some of the Pizza Huts i’ve been to stink worse than many other public restrooms. Sadly, it seems that like in America, Yum Foods in China is trying to cater too much to the low class bao fa hu.

i think the concept of “fast food” is lost on this one.

Pizza Hut isn’t fast food, at least not in China. (Haven’t been to a US Pizza Hut in over a decade, so I dunno.)

Although the service is slow and not attentive, i can see your point but isn’t a fast food joint supposed to be a place where you pay before you sit down and eat? Pizza Hut has become so popular and crowded with Chinese, that it isn’t a very pleasant experience. So noisy and dirty looking with many children running around.

Meat doesn’t make you fat, compared to starch and especially sugar.

And what place in China does have vegetarian options? Hell, half the time you get something you think doesn’t have meat in it, and it’s got shrimp in it.

Agreed. It hasn’t been easy living in China with so few vegetarian options. In the early days, i wanted to be more adventurous and order food i’d never tried, explicitly saying, “bu yao rou”, and just like you said, i’d find pork or shrimp in it. Fortunately, Qingdao has come a long way since 2001.

Ok, cool, so every foreign company in China should shut down as I’m sure they offend someone’s ‘sensitivities’ everywhere. Then the millions of unemployed will be happy I’m sure. End of the day, FDI made modern China, NOTHING else.
